After being postponed twice due to rain, forecasts calling for dry weather have signaled the green light for the weekend closure of the Bidwell Park and Central Chico exit on Hwy 99. The closure begins at 9 p.m. tonight and the exit will reopen 7 a.m. Monday.
Motorists can expect the number of southbound lanes to be reduced from two lanes to one around the construction area. During the 58-hour closure motorists will be directed to southbound East 20th Avenue then to the northbound on-ramp to get back onto the freeway. The northbound Hwy 99 exit to East 9th and East 8th Streets will remain open. A pedestrian detour has also been established.
The construction is part of a $37.9 million project by Caltrans and the Butte County Association of Governments to construct new auxiliary lanes and sound walls on Highway 99 between East 1st Avenue and the Highway 32 junction. Completion is expected in 2014.
