U.S. 2 at Stevens Pass is reopened after a natural avalanche occurred this morning. The Washington State Department of Transportation announced the road was closed from milepost 58 near Scenic to milepost 64.5 near the summit. The WSDOT Twitter account posted that the slide was 5 feet deep across four lanes. Highway 2 was buried when a chute, or "shot," as the avalanche team calls it, opened up at about 9 a.m.
Crews spent most of the afternoon clearing snow, trees, rocks and debris. The area is known as Old Faithful, because there are five natural avalanche chutes in the area. There is increased avalanche risk in this area.
Stevens Pass, elevation 4,056 ft, is a mountain pass through the Cascade Mountains located at the border of King County and Chelan County.
