SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Counties tabulating late ballots in California's two undecided congressional races are expected to release updated counts Wednesday.
Both races include Democratic incumbents hoping to hang on to their seats amid a Republican wave in the national midterm elections.
Democratic Rep. Ami Bera was clinging to a lead of just 697 votes out of more than 178,000 cast in his race against a former congressman, Republican Doug Ose. Their contest for a suburban Sacramento seat was the nation's most expensive House race, drawing $19.6 million in spending.
A veteran incumbent, Democratic Rep. Jim Costa, had a lead of 700 votes out of nearly 88,000 cast. His neck-and-neck race for a district centered in Fresno against Republican Johnny Tacherra surprised even party insiders.
