Shasta County Sheriff’s identified the victim and the shooter involved in the shooting death in Anderson Sunday evening.

James Michael Patterson, 34, and two other unidentified individuals went to the home of Carl Douglas Smedley located on Peach Lane in Redding. It was at that address that Patterson and Smedley got into an altercation.

Police said Patterson, armed with a hammer he brought with him to the residence, threatened Smedley with physical harm.

Smedley then fired two rounds at Patterson with a 380 caliber semi-automatic pistol he got from an acquaintance, striking the victim in the chest, telling police he fear for his personal safety and acted in self-defense.

Smedley also reported he did not know who Patterson was and had never met him before.

Patterson and the unidentified individuals fled the home and Patterson ended up at the 711 convenience store in Anderson where he was discovered and transported to Mercy Hospital. Patterson died from his injuries later.

During a search of Smedley’s property, a small indoor marijuana grow was located.

At this time no arrests have been made. Detectives said they will continue to follow up on information, conduct searches and serve search warrants.
