Vet group hosting Trump lost nonprofit status

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Associated Press has learned that the Internal Revenue Service has revoked the nonprofit status of the veterans organization that hosted Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's foreign policy speech on a retired battleship.

Veterans for a Strong America is led by a veteran and conservative campaign operative, Joel Arends (AIR-unds). Arends says he disagrees with the IRS determination and is appealing. He would not provide a copy of any tax returns the group had filed.

The IRS automatically revokes any group's nonprofit status if it fails to file tax returns for three consecutive years.

Arends and the Trump campaign say the endorsement event Tuesday night was legal. U.S. law restricts outside groups from coordinating their political advocacy with campaigns or spending more than a minimal amount on endorsement events.
