A large vehicle fire interrupted traffic in Red Bluff for 20 minutes after a fuel leak caused a car to go up in flames.

The fire happened yesterday around 3:15 p.m. on South Main Street at the I-5 interchange. Traffic was backed up past St. Elizabeth Hospital to the south, and to Luther Road to the north.

The 1974 Volkswagen Beetle was fully engulfed in flames and it took firefighters about ten minutes to control the fire.

The owner of the vehicle, Cindy Brown was not present, but the driver of the car was her 17-year-old grandson Kiernan Brown. He stated that the car suddenly stopped running and caught fire while he was driving. Brown and one passenger were in the vehicle and both escaped without any injuries.

Investigators determined that the fuel leak started from the engine compartment area where there had been recent repairs to the fuel system. The car was a total loss.
