Strong wind gusts fuel a large vegetation fire near south Chico just off Highway 99. The flames were visible from Highway 99 near the Neal Road intersection. Firefighters had their hands full and had to act quickly to deal with a lot of dry fuels on the property. It started around 1 a.m. this morning at the Earthworm Soil Factory on Neal Road. Fire officials say the blaze was being pushed in multiple directions at times, creating a series of spot fires. The fire eventually reached 150 acres before firefighters were able to contain the flames. There were several contributing factors that created problems for crews, including lots of dry grass and wood, and strong winds. One structure was threatened, but fortunately the wind was pushing the flames away from the building. It took crews a little over an hour to put out the flames. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
