A Chico State student passed away Tuesday night after a tree limb fell on her on campus. We have clarified with Joe Wills, Director of Public affairs at Chico State, the tree was a Red Oak tree 50 to 80-years-old whose limb fell and killed a female student on campus this afternoon.
Officials at the scene stated just after 3 p.m. a young woman and her friends were sitting underneath the tree outside Butte Hall in the quad area when the limb fell on her. The size of the limb was approximately 14” in diameter. The woman was knocked unconscious and eventually transported to Enloe Medical Center for head trauma where she later passed away.
Wills also says the tree was inspected prior to school starting and didn't raise in warning flags but they are having a tree service look over the tree to make sure there are no other possible falling limbs. The students personal information will not be released until her parents have been contacted.
