According to the Butte County Sheriff's Office, Sunday around 11:30am, a man came into the Butte County Jail lobby and said he had found what he believed was a pipe bomb near his home in Oroville. He said he picked it up and put it in his vehicle and drove it to the jail. The vehicle was moved to County Center Road, and rendered safe by the bomb squad. Investigators say the device had a cylindrical shape and characteristics similar to an improvised explosive device. It is not known how the device ended up in the man's yard.
County Center Drive was closed for roughly two hours while the bomb squad conducted the on-scene investigation.
Visiting hours at the Butte County Jail were suspended when the roads were closed. After the scene was secure and the roads were re-opened, jail visiting hours reconvened.
