Paradise police say the woman who at first identified a photo of her son as the teen who was hit while crossing the Skyway has now recanted. Police went to the woman's home and showed her a picture. The woman said the teenager in the photograph was her son, and identified the haircut she'd given him only days before. The press was notified that the teen had been positively identified. A half hour later, the woman contacted Paradise police again and said she spoke with the mother of her son's friend, and she was told her son was at the movies.
Investigators say the woman refused to go to the theater to check and see if her son was there. She also refused to give police any additional information that would help them corroborate her theory that it wasn't her son in the hospital. Investigators went to the theater and verified that her son was there.
They are still left with no answer as to who the teenager is who was hit on the Skyway. The accident happened just after 1:00pm Friday. They say the teen was crossing the street in the crosswalk when he was hit by an oncoming vehicle. The driver, Kenneth Gordon, 63, says he didn't see the teen until it was too late to stop. Police say neither drugs, nor alcohol are factors in this crash. Gordon was not arrested. Police are hoping someone will recognize the teen's shoes and watch. He was rushed to Enloe Medical Center where he is in critical condition, with head trauma and a broken arm and leg. He is described as 14 to 17 years old, about 6'0 and weighs 150lbs, with short brown hair and hazel eyes.
