Nord Avenue is back open after parts were closed this morning while Chico Police started their investigation into a hit-and-run incident that left a woman with life-threatening injuries.
A police officer at the scene told Action News Now that the incident happened around 11 p.m. on Nord Avenue just north of the Big Chico Creek bridge near the self-serve Chevron gas station. Police say the woman was riding her bike north on Nord Avenue when she was hit.
It appears the bicyclist was struck as she was crossing the bridge and then dragged about a 100 yards, where the wreckage of mangled bicycle now sits in a heap in the bike lane as investigators pour over the scene. She was taken to Enloe Medical Center.
Police say they have the suspected driver in custody.
Nord Avenue is closed from Second Street to the south and Steward Avenue to the north. Police are asking motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area during the investigation, which is expected to take several hours. Police have also confirmed that they are calling in a Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
