UPDATE: A PORTION OF HIGHWAY 70 IS BACK OPEN THIS MORNING. IT WAS OPENED JUST BEFORE ONE THIS MORNING.
Highway 70 was shutdown from Palermo Road to Power House Hill Road Thursday evening after a big rig overturned and caught fire.
It happened just after 7 p.m. A tractor trailer truck hauling canned fruitwas heading southbound on Highway 70. The driver drifted, striking a guardrail, overturning and catching fire. That fire spread to nearby vegetation. Cal Fire and Butte County Fire crews were on scene and able to put out the blaze.
While the CHP is still trying to determine why the driver drifted off the road, they say he may have fallen asleep or have a medical condition.
The driver only suffered minor cuts. No other vehicles were involved. The highway will remain closed until the debris and diesel are cleaned up. Officials do not have an estimate on when the work will be completed.
