UPDATE: Corning High staff member placed on administrative leave

UPDATE: Corning Union Superintendent John Burch said the suspect Fernando Barrera has been placed on administrative leave following accusations of an improper relationship Barrera had with a 14-year-old student.

Burch said Barrera cleared a full background check, finger printing and employer reference checks prior to being hired as a Teacher's Assistant at Corning High School. The schools says they're cooperating with police in the investigation.

A Corning teacher’s assistant was arrested after it was revealed that he allegedly sent lewd photos of himself to a student over social media, the Corning Police Department reported Tuesday.

Fernando Barrera, 30, has been charged with molesting a child under 18, sending or receiving obscene material and possessing obscene material.

Previous to the arrest, Corning Police received reports from parents of the fourteen-year-old student that there had been crimes committed against their daughter.

After an investigation, officers found that the suspect sent lewd photos and videos of himself to the girl and had befriended the girl on a social media site. Investigators also found that the suspect and the victim had been conversing in the days prior to the suspect’s arrest.

It has been confirmed that the suspect and victim were in contact during school hours, however Corning Police reiterated that they believed no other criminal activity occurred on the Corning High School Campus.

Corning Police also said they are continuing to investigate and more charges may come as a result of the investigation.

Barrera is currently out of Tehama County Jail on bond.
