At least three people were killed Wednesday after a structure collapsed at a Brazilian soccer stadium set to host the opening match of the World Cup next year, police said.
The Arena Corinthians venue, in Sao Paulo, has been undergoing an extensive refurbishment and faced a tight deadline set by soccer's international governing body FIFA to get the work done.
It was not immediately clear what had collapsed. The BBC reported a crane fell on the stadium, destroying part of the stands and killing three people.
Television images showed a metal structure buckled on top of the stands and a destroyed LED panel, the Associated Press reported.
