VALLEJO, Calif. (AP) - The uncle of a Northern California woman who was reported kidnapped says police were reckless and overzealous in calling it a hoax after she turned up safe.
Jeff Kane tells CBS Sacramento in a telephone interview that a news conference Wednesday by Vallejo police drew unsupported conclusions about 29-year-old Denise Huskins.
Huskins' boyfriend reported Monday that she was abducted from the home they share in Vallejo, triggering an extensive investigation.
Huskins turned up Wednesday 400 miles away in Huntington Beach.
Kane says he can't reveal any conversation he's had with his niece because he's an attorney. But he says he sincerely believes her disappearance was not a hoax.
The uncle says the family's next step is to deal with what he terms a character assassination.
