U.S. Geological Survey issues false earthquake alert in Redding

The U.S. Geological Survey issued an erroneous alert based off an earthquake that struck in Alaska.

It was originally reported that by the USGS that a magnitude-5.1 temblor hit at 12:05 a.m. Friday and was centered 25 miles northwest of Redding, in neighboring Trinity County.

It was later learned the alert was based off the magnitude-6.7 quake that struck around 11 p.m. off the Alaska coast.
