U.S. Forest Service firefighters killed in crash

Two missing firefighters were found dead in a car submerged in the Trinity River Thursday afternoon, the California Highway Patrol confirmed.

On Thursday afternoon a passerby reported an overturned vehicle in the Trinity River near Kimtu Beach.

According to the CHP, first responders found a black Toyota SUV submerged in the Trinity River with two deceased occupants. A preliminary investigation indicates the SUV drove off Seeley McIntosh Road sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon.

The crash victims were determined to be two U.S. Forest Service firefighters who left work in Salyer Wednesday night and never showed up for work Thursday morning.

The California Highway Patrol Humboldt Area office is investigating this traffic collision.

UPDATE: The two men killed have been identified as Dale Alexander Mendes of Willow Creek and Jason Fritz Price, Jr. of Weitchpec
