The Butte County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with the Santa Rosa Police Department and Sebastopol Police Department arrested two men connected to a botched attempted marijuana robbery which left one suspect dead on Upper Palermo Road November 26.

The sheriff’s office stated in a press release today they have been working in tandem with the two Bay Area police departments ever since the suspect killed during the attempted robbery was identified as 24-year-old Hector Gabriel of Santa Rosa. His two alleged accomplices, 38-year-old Salvador Mendoza Jr. and 19-year-old Yonatan Tesfazghi, both of Santa Rosa, were arrested and charged with murder yesterday.

Just after 2 p.m. on November 26, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a home invasion robbery at 6934 Upper Palermo Road in Palermo. When deputies arrived they found one of the homeowners had shot an intruder, later identified as Gabriel. A suspect vehicle described as a newer model Mercedes SUV was seen fleeing the area. Gabriel was transported to Enloe Medical Center where he later died from his wounds. Deputies quickly concluded the motive of the attempted robbery was marijuana related.

The two suspects were charged with murder “based on the illegal and dangerous act committed by them was such that it resulted in the death of their co-conspirator,” the department stated in its press release. Butte County Undersheriff Kory Honea stated the district attorney’s office will review the case and will decide whether or not to further pursue those murder charges.

Detectives from the sheriff’s office indicated the investigation is ongoing as they continue to identify remaining suspects.
