Shasta County Sheriff’s Officials say alcohol played a role in a turkey hunting accident that left a 63 year old man hospitalized in critical condition.
It happened at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, in a wooded area off of Ranch Road in Round Mountain.
Investigators say 32 year old Roy Davis was hunting in the area with a shotgun when he heard what he thought was a turkey … so he fired shots in that direction.
It turns out he shot Wilburn Shaver, who was using a turkey call.
Shaver was driven to the Montgomery Creek Fire Hall where Deputies arrived, and then Shaver was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center.
While the case was initially investigated by the Sheriff’s office, it’s now being turned over to the California Fish and Wildlife Department.
Davis meanwhile has been charged with negligent discharge of a firearm.
