An arrest has been made in connection with several burglaries targeting students from China … attending a flight school in Redding.
On January 25th, Cell phones, laptops and other electronics were stolen from a Trudi Lane apartment … while the people who lived there were sleeping.
Two days later one of the flight students awoke to an intruder inside the apartment. The 22 year old student was struck several times with a handgun when he confronted the intruder … who fled with more items, but dropped a flashlight at the scene.
There was yet another break-in as the students slept the night of February 11th. It was later discovered that the burglar had drilled a h ole through the door to bypass the lock. Yet more cell phones and computers were stolen. Police say the losses from all three thefts total more than $9,000.
Today a man matching the suspect description was arrested outside a home on the 1400 block of Old Alturas Road … near Trudi Lane. Police say 20 year old David Ruiz … a transient from Oregon … was found in possession of lock picking tools, a pellet revolver that appeared to be a real gun, hypodermic syringes.
Investigators say Ruiz confessed to all three incidents. He was booked at the Shasta County Jail on the charges of Residential Robbery, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, three counts of Residential Burglary, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia###
