Trees removed along Mission Ranch Boulevard in Chico

More than 20 sycamore trees went down in Chico this week, but it had nothing to do with the weather.

Crews have been out cutting down sycamore trees along Mission Ranch Boulevard because the trees' roots were causing sidewalks to heave and threatening water and sewer lines in the areas.

In November the Chico City Council approved the removal of 25 trees along the busy street. Environmentalists had asked the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission to consider other options, but that was denied.

The trees will be replaced with some that are more suitable for the area and in accordance with the city's current standards on trees in public places.
