Redding firefighters responded to a vegetation fire at the end of Barbara road this morning, quickly containing it to a hillside ... and preventing damage to homes.

It started at 9:19 a.m., and burned one acre.

A man described as a transient was seen in the area at the time of the fire and was detained by Redding Police for questioning. After questioning by a Redding Fire Investigator, the man reportedly admitted to smoking in the area but denied knowledge of starting the fire.

The cause of the blaze is officially listed as "dropped smoking material". Officials warn that fire danger is high with hot temperatures and low humidity, and something as small as a cigarette cause cause a dangerous fire.
