A City Parks employee is breathing a sigh of relief Monday after he nearly missed getting hit in the face with a claw hammer by a raging transient, the Redding Police reported.

Redding Police officers responded to the bathrooms near the boat ramp in Caldwell Park around 6 a.m. regarding a city employee being threatened with a hammer.

Eric Stevens, a City of Redding Parks employee, was trying to clean the bathrooms when he Patrick Francis Brooks, 26, found sleeping in a sleeping bag inside the bathroom.

Brookes was not happy about being disturbed and eventually came out of the bathroom armed with a claw hammer.

Brooks made several threats to kill Stevens. Stevens attempted to back away, however, Brooks aggressively advanced towards him swinging the hammer at Stevens’ head. Stevens was able retreat at which time Brooks narrowly missed hitting his head with the hammer.

Brooks was detained and booked into the Shasta County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats.
