A man described as a transient has been arrested in Chico in connection with several arson fires.

Police say early Friday morning, a witness saw 44-year-old James Newsome pry a screen from a window at a home on west fourth street and force it open before throwing something inside.

Flames erupted moments later. The home was damaged, but no one was hurt.

Minutes later a trash can, a tree, and a mattress were all set on fire.

Newsome was spotted and arrested after being identified by several witnesses.

He's charged with burglary and arson.
