Transient arrested in alleged kidnapping attempt

A Redding man was arrested after he allegedly tried to kidnap an infant outside a restaurant Wednesday afternoon.

According to a news release from the Redding Police Department, officers arrested Jonathan Saltekoff, 38, on suspicion of kidnapping after they were called to the Sky Foods Restaurant on Athens Avenue just before 1 p.m. Wednesday.

When officers arrived at the restaurant, Carmody Hamon, 39, told them Saltekoff took off with his child and the child's stroller from outside the restaurant. Hamon reportedly stopped Saltekoff, got his child back and ran inside the restaurant, staff members then locked out Saltekoff.

Saltekoff fled the scene but officer caught up with him on Park Marina near Parkview Drive minutes later. Saltekoff denied any involvement in the alleged kidnapping, but Hamon and other witnesses told officers he was the person responsible.

The child was not injured in the incident.

Saltekoff, a known tranisent who has an extensive criminal history was booked into Shasta County jail on the charge of kidnapping.
