Train Collides with Vehicle in Chico

(UPDATE)-4:30 p.m.- At approximately 6:45 a.m. this morning, Chico Police responded to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks just south of West 9th street regarding a collision between a southbound train and a vehicle. When officers arrived they located a Jeep Cherokee that had “obviously been struck by a train,” according to the Police Department’s press release. The vehicle was found to be unoccupied with no report of injuries.

The initial investigation led police to believe the vehicle had been stolen sometime during the evening or early morning hours. The suspect(s) attempted to drive over the tracks, but the vehicle became lodged in the tracks and the vehicle was abandoned.

Officers responded to an address at the 500 block of Paseo Companeros Street, eventually contacting the registered owner of the vehicle who was unaware the vehicle had been stolen.

(UPDATE) 9:08 a.m.- All railroads crossings have reopened.

We are hearing reports of a vehicle versus a train at Dayton at the railroad tracks in Chico. It happened around 6:45 Friday morning. Chico police were notified by Union Pacific Railroad of the accident. At this time police say railroad crossings south of West Sacramento are closed. At this point there have been no reported injuries. It seems to be an abandoned vehicle.
