Tracks reopen following Feather River Canyon derailment

The tracks have reopened and train traffic has resumed in the Feather River Canyon after a train carrying corn grain derailed early Tuesday morning.

The tracks were closed Tuesday when 11 of the 106 Union Pacific cars derailed and slid down a large embankment near Belden. The train - headed from Nebraska to the Central Valley - had an engineer and conductor on board, but they were not injured.

Crews worked through the night cleaning up spilled corn and clearing the tracks and Union Pacific Railroad spokesman Aaron Hunt says the tracks were reopened at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation and Hunt says it could be several weeks before the cause is determined.
