Happy Valley Elementary School was locked down briefly on Tuesday afternoon when an 11-year-old student was seen showing a toy gun to classmates.

Shasta County Sheriff's Deputies responded to reports that a student was possibly armed with a handgun on campus just after 12:15 p.m. While en-route to the school they learned the suspect had been detained in the principal's office.

Deputies conducted an investigation upon arriving on campus and learned an 11-year-old had recently purchased a toy handgun brought it to school to show his friends.

The toy handgun was manufactured to shock the finger of the person pulling the trigger, and when the students were seen playing with the gun, an immediate lockdown was ordered.

In a news release the Shasta County Sheriff's Office praised school officials for their swift action, and said the case has been forwarded to Juvenile Probation for review.
