NEW YORK (AP) - Facing a cringe-worthy crisis after decades of polishing up Times Square's image, some city officials are proposing roped-off areas for the painted ladies and costumed characters who seek tips to pose for tourist photos.
But several of the topless, body-painted women who spoke candidly with The Associated Press this past week made it clear that, restrictions or not, they're not going anywhere.
Twenty-nine-year-old Saira Nicole says she'd defy any move to restrict the women to a specific zone. As she put it, "You're not putting a stop to me, period."
But City Councilman Corey Johnson says the city must ease pedestrian crowding by setting some restrictions. He's a member of a hastily convened city task force that has proposed the "activity zones."
