OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Oakland police say a suspected shoplifter is in custody in connection with what they initially thought was a carjacking and kidnapping outside a supermarket.

Officer Johnna Watson said 54-year-old Roy McCamey of Oakland was picked up by authorities on Wednesday, hours after authorities determined that no abduction or carjacking had occurred.

McCamey allegedly matches the description of a man who stole items inside the Safeway prior to Tuesday's incident. Police initially said a man armed with a knife took over a red four-door sedan with an elderly man and 13-year-old girl inside.

But Watson said on Wednesday investigators determined the girl was actually an adult, and all three people knew each other.

They met with the driver on Wednesday, but are still looking for the woman.

Police say all three could face criminal charges.
