COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) - Thousands are expected at an Orange County rally with leading Republican presidential contender Donald Trump as his campaign turns toward California.
Trump will speak at the event late Thursday at an amphitheater in Costa Mesa that holds at least 8,000 people.
A Trump campaign staffer says supporters lined up outside the venue at midday, hours before doors opened for the evening rally.
Democratic groups planned to protest, saying Trump's campaign rhetoric is racist, misogynistic and not welcome in the Southern California county.
Orange County sheriff's spokesman Lt. Mark Stichter says as many as 10,000 people could show up for the event and to protest.
Fresh off a sweep of five Northeastern primaries, Trump is courting California voters hoping to lock up his party's nomination at the state's June 7 primary.
