(UPDATE) 1:26 p.m.-This afternoon the Glenn County Sheriff’s Department has compiled a full lift of Ag thefts/rural crimes from March 12 of this year until the most recently reported theft during this Labor Day weekend. According to the department, the financial losses sustained by Glenn County farmers during that period is now totaled at $201,983. The most notable of those being the theft of processed walnuts from Carrier Family Farms on June 26 valued at $91,455 and the over $80,000 in produce bags stolen from Orange Blossom Packing Company last weekend.
Glenn County has been plagued with agricultural thefts throughout 2013, the county’s most recently reported theft totaled a net loss of over $80,000 for one farmer.
“I can’t remember a substantial theft of produce bags in a long time,” said Glenn County Sheriff Larry Jones. “This is a devastating loss for the owner.”
The Glenn County Sheriff’s Department was contacted just after 6:45 a.m. this morning by Samuel Sanchez, the 65-year-old owner of Orange Blossom Packing Company located on County Road P south of Orland. Sanchez told the department the thieves made off with 436,000 produce packing bags for oranges over the Labor Day weekend. Bags of various sizes were taken, but the total loss was estimated to be approximately $81,720.
The department indicated in its press release some of the bags were in a storage facility that was not locked, thus constituting the case as a burglary. Other bags were located on pallets outside. From what the department has gathered so far, the suspects likely had to have made multiple trips on a flat bed or trailer to pull off a burglary of this size. Jones stated all the bags have either an “Orange Blossom” or “Sanchez Farms” label on them. A detective is currently on scene taking photographs and processing evidence.
According to the most updated numbers, between March 12 and September 3 of this year farmers in Glenn County have sustained over $196, 492 in losses as a result of Ag thefts.
