The Latest on a deadly small-plane crash on a Southern California freeway (all times local):

5:50 p.m.

A former major league catcher says he once owned the plane involved in a fatal crash on a Southern California freeway, and he had safely landed it on the same highway 16 years ago.

Matt Nokes told The Associated Press that he sold the plane years ago, but he knew the current owner who crashed Saturday on Interstate 15.

Authorities say pilot Dennis Hogge was seriously injured when his plane landed and slammed into a car on the side of the road.

One woman in the car was killed and five others, including Hogge and a female passenger, were injured.

Nokes says Hogge is an outstanding pilot and plane builder.

Nokes was piloting the Lancair IV on its second flight in February 2000 when the engine quit and he safely landed on the busy freeway.

Authorities say the small plane that crashed into a car on a Southern California freeway killed a female passenger in the vehicle and seriously injured the pilot.

California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Parent says the pilot and his passenger each suffered major injuries in the crash Saturday morning on Interstate 15.

Fire department spokesman John Buchanan says witnesses reported that the plane crash-landed on its belly and plowed into the trunk of a Nissan Altima stopped on the side of the highway about 50 miles north of San Diego.

A woman in the back of the car died at the scene. The car's driver and two other passengers were expected to survive their injuries.

Buchanan says the impact of the crash nearly pushed the rear bumper all the way into the back passenger area.

Authorities say a small plane has crashed on a Southern California freeway and struck a car, killing one person and injuring five others.

California Highway Patrol Officer Tony Polizzi said the crash occurred Saturday morning on Interstate 15, about 50 miles north of San Diego.

Witnesses told dispatchers that the plane landed on a vehicle.

Polizzi says one person in the car died and three others were taken to the hospital. He says two people in the small plane also were transported for treatment.

The conditions of the injured were not immediately known.

The crash was blocking two lanes and causing backups on the freeway that runs to Las Vegas.
