More than 125 people attended tonights Chico Planning Commission meeting. The room was filled.. with many in support of the proposed Skyway House, and just as many against it.
Skyway House executives spoke at the meeting asking for approval of their new facility which will house 22 female clients. It will occupy a building located on the Esplanade, between Amber Grove and Greenfield Drives.
City Planning staff recommended the commission approve the permit. But before taking a vote, 28 speakers addressed the commission. 21 of them were against the facility. Most of them, residents in the area.. Worried "The Skyway House" will make their neighborhood unsafe and lower property values. But Skyway House officials say they were very careful about their decision. And in the end, the commission approved the new facility with a four to one vote.
Skyway House Executive Director Jennifer Carvalho says, "As an agency we have a good neighbor policy, we want to be a good part of the community and so we've really exhaustively looked for a site that would really fit our needs and meet the needs of the community as well."
Amber Grove Resident Rick Madison says, "Although it's a great project and would benefit lots of people.. It just doesn't fit our area."
From here on out, those opposed to the use permit, will have ten days to appeal the decision to the City Council..
