The first day of testimony began Thursday in the trial of Mark Duenas, who is accused of murdering his wife of 33-years at their Cottonwood home.

The day began with opening arguments by the prosecution and defense attorney teams.

Shasta County Deputy Eamon Fitzgerald said the prosecution will prove that Mark Duenas stabbed his wife Karen to death May 5, 2012 so he could carry on with what has been described as an emotional affair with a woman in Idaho.

Defense attorney Ron Powell gave a brief opening statement announcing that his client "is not guilty of these charges" and that law enforcement has wrongly focused only on Mark Duenas from the beginning.

The prosecution's first witness of the trial was Annette Green, the woman alleged to be involved in an affair with Duenas.
