Tehama County Sheriff's deputies Looking for Gunman; Hiker in fatal shooting identified

Tehama County Sheriff’s Office announced today that two hikers were robbed and shot at gunpoint on the Iron Canyon Trail on Friday.

Around 3:00 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies received a report that two people were suffering from gunshot wounds about 100 yards from the Iron Canyon Trailhead off State Route 36E.

According to the press release, 69-Year-old Francis “Pat’ Gregory and another hiker a 76-year-old man from Manton were walking on the trail that is when the suspect came up to them with a gun and demanded money and their personal belongings.

An uninvolved hiker came upon the two victim just three hours after the shooting, when deputies arrived at the scene Gregory was pronounced dead at the scene and the 76-year-old man was air-lifted to an area hospital for treatment and is listed in critical condition as of this morning, according to the press release.

The suspect is described as a white male , approximately 6 feet tall, thin build and with short black hair and a black mustache wearing dark colored denim pants and a dark of black t-shirt with unknown design on the t-shirt.

Tehama County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help from the public from anyone that may have been at the Iron Canyon Trail Head between the hour of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Friday is asked to call Detective Jeff Garrett at 530-529-7920.
