A man swimming in the Sacramento River, near the Woodson Bridge, is presumed to have drowned after he went under water and never reemerged Wednesday afternoon.
According to Tehama County Sheriff's Lt. Yvette Borden, witnesses say the swimmer, a man in his late teens or earlier twenties, was trying to cross the river at Woodson Bridge Park, east of Corning.
The swimmer reportedly began to struggle and went under water a little after 2 p.m.
Search and Rescue crews responded to the scene and searched the area for an hour, but those efforts have been called off due to treacherous diving conditions.
Officials say the focus of the operation has now shifted to recovery rather than rescue.
