Tehama County sheriff's officials say an inmate who managed to walk out of jail Thursday night was arrested in downtown Red Bluff 30 minutes later.
According to the sheriff's office, as 21-year-old Juan Diaz was being booked into jail Wednesday night he managed to walk through an unlocked interior door and enter the pre-booking area. He then managed to exit the jail as an officer left the building.
Jail staff notified local law enforcement agencies of the escape and just 36 minutes after Diaz escaped he was found by a Red Bluff police officer walking on Elm Street downtown.
Diaz was returned to the Jail, booked on the original battery charge and an additional escape charge.
The sheriff's office has reviewed the jail's operational procedures and believe they've identified how Diaz was able to escape.
