A Tehama County Jail inmate has died in an apparent suicide, hours after he requested to see a mental health official.

Deputies were called to the cell of Damon Marichalar, 36, by other inmates just before 10 p.m. Sunday. Marichalar was found hanging from a bed sheet tied to the top of his bunk.

Red Bluff fire crews and emergency medical services pronounced Marichalar dead at 10:13 p.m.

The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office says Marichalar requested to speak with mental health officials three hours before his death. He was subsequently interviewed by health officials and denied being suicidal.

Marichalar was booked into the jail on December 4 on a violation of parole. At the time of his arrest, Marichalar gave no indication he was thinking about killing himself.
