A big rig carrying apple cider crashed into a Redding neighborhood near Interstate 5 south of Bechelli Lane Friday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the truck crashed while traveling southbound Interstate 5 at 3:20 p.m. and ended up nearly crashing into a residence on Helen Street.

CHP officers on the scene say the driver, Timothy McCarthy was eating and looked down, causing him to lose control of the truck. The truck went off the road, struck a light pole and then slammed into a tree, which prevented the truck from slamming into a home.

According to the CHP the entire back axle on the truck has fallen off and there was originally concern that the truck could be leaking fuel.

Officers say drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash and Mcarthy is not facing any charges. He was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, nobody else was injured.
