"You never have to water or fertilize ever again, you don't have to mow ever" said Bruce Whitegiver, owner of Sutherland Landscape Center. If that sounds good to you, then synthetic grass may be the perfect alternative. Sutherland Landscape Center owner Bruce Whitegiver says synthetic grass is a growing trend. While artificial types of grass have been around for several years, he says newer types are far superior. "In old turf you had to put a sand top dressing on it after you installed it to help the grass stand up, you don't need to do that anymore" said Whitegiver.
In addition, new synthetic grass types such as GrassTex handle the heat better, preventing it from melting. It doesn't attract bugs, and is safe for kids and pets. Newer artificial grasses also look more realistic and come with better guarantees. GrassTex makers estimate the synthetic grass will last up to 30 years if properly maintained and comes with an 8 year color warranty.
Synthetic grass is also a greener way to live. Some sources suggest an average home could save around $22,000 gallons of water a year. Also, some areas offer tax rebates, such as Southern California's save water, save a buck program.
"This is the same color year round. It looks good the day you put it in, till you know... 20 years later" Whitegiver said. Quality synthetic grass averages around eight to ten dollars a square foot installed, but requires no more maintenance then simply hosing it off.
