The two suspects facing murder charges stemming from a 2014 Redding street fight that left 48-year-old Claude Alexander Schimes dead have pled guilty Friday in a Shasta County Courthouse.

Nathan Robert Byers, 21, and Richard James Hiers, 24, pled guilty to the crime of voluntary manslaughter in the death of Schmies.

They also pled guilty to the crime of assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury and admitted an enhancement for causing great bodily injury on John Fritz.

The plea was in exchange for an eight year state prison sentence. Both men were immediately sentenced.

Investigators say Byers and Hiers were in a four-minute fight near the intersection of Elmwood and Veda Streets in Redding in July, 2014.

Redding Police initially responded to reports of a car accident, but found Schimes and 29-year-old John Raymond Fritz laying in the street injured.

Schimes was transported to Mercy Medical Center where he passed away.
