Redding police have arrested a man they say stole a 68-year-old woman’s purse at a local bus stop Monday morning.

Officers were called to a bus stop on El Reno Lane near Westside Road around 9 a.m., where they say a man had forcefully stolen a woman’s purse.

When officers arrived at the bus stop, the victim was still clutching the purse strings that had snapped off when the thief yanked the purse from her.

Witnesses told police the robber fled toward the Capri Motel, where surveillance video captured him running into a room.

Police surrounded the room and took 19-year-old Michael Griggs into custody.

Griggs admitted to forcefully stealing the purse, and told officers he thought the woman the robbed looked like an easy target. He has been booked into the Shasta County Jail on suspicion of robbery and elder abuse.
