Suspected car thief caught in the act

A man out of jail on his own recognizance for attempting to steal a vehicle, was caught trying to a steal a car in Chico early Tuesday morning, police say.

According to the Chico Police Department, officers were called to 1000 block of East 8th Street around 4 a.m. when a resident reported a man rummaging through her car.

When officers arrived the man was still in the car, but he immediately fled on foot. A K-9 caught him a short time later, and police were able to identify the would-be thief as 21-year-old Anthony Beck.

Police say that after Beck was taken into custody, they found a shaved key in the car’s ignition.

According to police, Beck has an extensive criminal record, and was out of jail on his own recognizance for other felony charges, including stealing a car.

Beck was arrested on suspicion of attempting to steal a vehicle, resisting arrest, and assault on K-9 for allegedly kicking the dog as it apprehended him. He has been booked into the Butte County Jail.
