SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A man arrested, then later released in connection with a dismembered body found inside a suitcase in San Francisco has died.

San Francisco Police Sgt. Monica MacDonald said Sunday night that 54-year-old Mark Andrus died after admitting himself to a hospital the previous day.

She said the police department couldn't confirm the circumstances that led to his hospitalization, or the cause of his death.

The city Medical Examiner's office declined to release information about Andrus.

Andrus was considered a person of interest since a suitcase stuffed with human remains was found in the South of Market area on Jan. 28. He was taken into custody, then released a few days later when prosecutors declined to charge him with murder.

They said there wasn't enough evidence in the case.
