A suspect is in custody after an armed robbery at a local grocery store Saturday afternoon.

Chico police responded to an emergency call approximately 1:00 p.m. at the Safeway store on East Avenue. The caller said a man approached the pharmacy counter armed with a handgun and demanded medication from the clerk, according to a Chico Police Department press release. The suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle. No one was injured in the robbery.

Based on witness descriptions of the getaway vehicle and suspect, officers found the car driving on Centennial Avenue shortly after the robbery. After a brief pursuit, officers stopped the car and took the suspect into custody. The man was picked out by the store clerk and identified as Robert Hoffman, 30, of Chico.

Officers also found a replica handgun and the stolen medications in the suspect’s vehicle. Investigators have not released exactly what medications the suspect demanded. Hoffman was charged with robbery, burglary, evading arrest and booked into the Butte County Jail.
