US tobacco companies have lost their latest legal fight against government limits on tobacco advertising.

Today the US Supreme Court upheld the 2009 Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act which gave the government the authority to regulate the sale and promotion of tobacco products.

Under the law, tobacco companies are not allowed to sponsor public events, offer free product samples or branded merchandise.

Tobacco companies argued the law is a violation of free speech under the first amendment.

Today the high court disagreed and upheld the 2009 tobacco federal legislation.
