The Shasta County Board of Supervisors have declared a local state of emergency in the Fall River Mills area due to the closure of Cassel Fall River Road at the Pit River Bridge in eastern Shasta County.

Shasta County Public Works officials say a recent shutdown of the bridge by Caltrans has forced emergency responders to detour approximately five miles into McArthur, an increase of roughly 10 minutes.

Officials say the emergency resolution adopted by the board today could lead to a temporary bridge, or potentially speed up the Caltrans construction project.

Caltrans began work the archaeological phase of the construction project Monday, and after two weeks of research officials expect to have a better idea of when construction will begin on the new bridge.
