The Durham High School volleyball team captured a section title on Saturday. A big reason why was the play of Summer Vercruyssen. She's a star on the front line but her hard work and success reach much further than the volleyball court.
Our Ross Field has more with the Subway Scholar Athlete of the Week.
A surreal feeling settles in.
"I still can't really believe it actually," said Vercruyssen.
Summer Vercruyssen and the Durham Trojans are the Division-V section champs.
"It's just great to bring this title back to Durham," added Vercruyssen.
A feat that would not have happened without Summer.
In the section final against Colusa she recorded 27 kills and 7 blocks. It's the latest in a long line of fine performances.
Vercruyssen ranks first in the Northern Section in hitting percentage, second in kills, fourth in blocks and ninth in aces.
It's motivation that sets her apart from her peers.
"Even if I look like I'm not having fun, on the inside this competition, this drive to better yourself every day to challenge yourself and to have other people test and challenge you, it's very satisfying when you can overcome an obstacle, like this game, I just couldn't imagine my life without it," said Vercruyssen.
Determination that carries over to classroom.
Vercruyssen sports a 3.8 GPA while taking two AP courses.
She hopes to earn an academic scholarship to a four-year university where she'd like to play volleyball as well.
"There's so many options out there, I just have to decide what's the best route for me to take," said Vercruyssen.
No matter what happens, she will always have a special memory of helping Durham win a section championship.
"This is an amazing team, we just have an amazing sense of camaraderie," said Vercruyssen.
