The Shasta Wolves volleyball team has roared out the gates with an impressive 21-5 record. They are led by a host of veterans but in this week's Subway Scholar Athlete, Ross Field introduces us to a stellar sophomore who's becoming a household name both on and off the court.
For Shasta High's Sophie Wood, volleyball is more than just a hobby, it's a passion.
"I love volleyball, I'd play with a balloon when I was three years old. I spend the majority of my time doing it," said Wood.
On the court the majority of her time is spent playing setter. But she also contributes in other areas, including kills, blocks, digs and aces. She has fun being an all-around player.
"Setting is cool because it's the quarterback of volleyball, you're making the main decision, who to set and where to put it. But hitting is fun, nothing is better than getting a great kill that goes straight down, and then when I'm hitting I can block so I can stuff people. I just enjoy it all," said Wood.
She started playing competitively in third grade, but has since turned into a leader for the 21-5 Wolves. Despite only being a sophomore, she was selected as team captain.
"I'm always trying to encourage people and at practice I hate it when people slack off and stuff like that," said Wood.
An example for players both on and off court, Sophie carries a 3.8 GPA. Between fourteen hours a week spent practicing or competing, even more hours studying, she's worked hard for everything she has, learning a lot from balancing school and athletics.
"I get up at 4:50 a.m., go to the gym at 5:30 a.m., go to school all day then after school we have twenty minutes before practice, then after practice I go home eat dinner, shower, do homework until 11:30 p.m. and then go to bed and do it all again the next day. I wish there were maybe thirty hours in the day so I could have a little bit more sleep sometimes, but other than that I love everything that I'm doing I don't cut anything out because I love it," said Wood.
